DIY // A Wall-Sized Inspiration Board

Brian and I pretty much constantly have projects going on around the house.  Our most recent was a giant bulletin board for my art room.  I had stuff collaged on the wall, but it just felt so cluttered to me so we came up with this idea.  It’s pretty simple.  All you need is:

  • 4 x 6 piece of nicer plywood (or whatever dimensions you desire)
  • 4 x 6 styrofoam house insulation (or a sheet of cork if you can find it!)
  • Spray adhesive
  • Artist’s canvas (or other durable fabric)
  • Staple gun & staples
  • 3″ Wood Screws
  • Drill
  • Wood Trim
  • Stain
  • Miter Saw (if not, have your local hardware store cut your trim to your measurements)
Step 1-
I missed getting a picture of the board prep, but basically, you adhere the insulation to the plywood with a strong spray adhesive.  Then, simply wrap the board with your fabric.  I would recommend stapling in the middle of opposites sides first, then corners, then in between.  Be sure to stretch but not strain the fabric or it will look distorted.  (You may want to cut and stain your trim at this time too.)
Step two-
Measure and mark where you want to hang it.  If you want a wall-sized one, you will for sure need to locate studs to drill the screws into.  Once you are ready, you’ll need two hands–one to hold the board in place (This was me…struggling, grunting, whining) and one to drill the screws through the board and into the wall.  I would recommend pre-drilling so as not to tear the fabric and to make it easier.

Step 3-

The final step is to add the “frame” to polish it off.  Brian pre-drilled the holes in the trim and the board (which requires that you match up the placement of the holes very accurately), then screwed them into the board.  We went ahead and used the same screws because we used such a dark stain and didn’t mind them showing.  You could you a more decorative option or just nails.

Step 4-

Get inspired! Decorate! Collage! Go crazy!  (I’ll show you mine once I’ve got it all decked out!)
